How Often Should Restaurants Update Their Food Photos and Videos?

A new menu launches. The photos look incredible. Your team is excited, your social media manager has plenty of content to work with, and everything feels fresh.

Fast forward two months.

You’ve already used the best images across Instagram, Facebook and your delivery platforms. The remaining photos all have a similar look because they were taken on the same day, under the same lighting, with the same styling. Your feed starts to feel repetitive, even if your food hasn’t changed.

This is something I see often when working with restaurants.

The challenge usually isn’t the quality of the photography. It’s that the content was created for a single moment in time, while marketing is constantly evolving.

Great food deserves more than one photoshoot

Many restaurants schedule a professional shoot around a new menu launch. It makes sense. You want beautiful hero images of every dish, a few videos, and enough content to announce what’s new.

The problem is that a restaurant’s marketing doesn’t stop after launch.

A few months later, your priorities have changed. You might be promoting weekday set lunches, highlighting a seasonal special, introducing a cocktail pairing, celebrating Father’s Day, or preparing for the festive season. Suddenly, the images you have don’t quite support the story you’re trying to tell.

What a typical menu shoot look like:

What monthly fresh content for socials looks like?

Focus on weekend brunch sets, new cocktails or highlight the wine recommendations for the month. Fresh content to pique the interest of the viewers frequently to create a pull to the restaurant.

Content should evolve with your business

Rather than thinking of photography as a one-off project, it’s worth looking at it as an extension of your marketing strategy.

If your next campaign focuses on lunch offerings, your visuals should highlight that experience. If reservations are slower on weekdays, perhaps it’s time to create content around business lunches or quick dining options. When festive periods approach, your audience expects something different again.

Creating content throughout the year allows your visuals to stay relevant to the conversations you’re having with your customers.

So, how often should you refresh your photography?

There isn’t a single answer, but a good starting point is:

  • Every 2–3 months for restaurants with a relatively stable menu.

  • Every 1–2 months for restaurants that are actively marketing, running campaigns, or regularly introducing seasonal dishes.

Smaller, more frequent shoots often provide more value than one large annual shoot. They keep your content feeling current and allow your marketing to adapt as your business does.

Think beyond today’s menu

One of the biggest opportunities is planning photography around where your restaurant is going, not just where it is today.

If you’re shooting in April, it helps to think ahead. What campaigns will you be running in June? Will you be promoting set lunches? Summer specials? A new drinks menu? Family dining? Corporate events?

Capturing those assets before you need them means your marketing team always has relevant, high-quality content ready to use. Instead of reacting to your content needs, you’re planning for them.

Fresh content keeps your brand feeling alive

Your customers may not consciously notice that a photo has appeared multiple times, but they do notice when a restaurant consistently feels fresh, active and relevant. Regularly updating your visual content doesn’t necessarily mean changing your menu. Sometimes it’s simply about telling new stories with the food and experiences you already offer. After all, your photography shouldn’t just document your dishes. It should support your business goals throughout the year.
